2023 Clearview Reserve Hawkes Bay Chardonnay

95 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
The Clearview Reserve is a classic Chardonnay mostly sourced from quite old vines (more than 30 years old) and fermented in new oak. Its big presence and lush array of toasty, mealy and savoury notes is always balanced by bright citrus and a fine texture. This will soften nicely with age, but even now it's an immensely mouth-filling and satisfying Chardonnay. Grab it while it lasts!

Its Origins

In 1986 Tim Turvey purchased a property at Te Awanga, Hawke’s Bay. Together with business partner Helma van den Berg, they hand grafted and planted the first vines in the winter of 1988. Clearview Estate Winery Ltd was established for the first red wine vintage in 1989. Vineyard plantings continued at 3 acres per annum. Tim and Helma also designed and built the winery, adding to the cellar door and restaurant as the business grew. The Estate grows 11 grape varieties from 19.4 hectares (48 acres) of Te Awanga vineyards. They intensively manage and prune their vines for low yields of quality fruit. The seaside location has a moderating influence and they often enjoy an extended ripening period well into autumn. The clay and loam soils sit over deep beds of free draining river shingle. Leased land at Gimblett Road provides Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

What The Critics Say

95/100 and Top 12 Chardonnays of Hawkes Bay, Cameron Douglas MS

"A bouquet with shape and form, immediate complexity. Aromas of complexity with a distinctive fruit, spice and winemaker's style delivered all at once. Lees and stone fruits, peach, grapefruit and mineral. Lovely weight and texture with a generous satin-cream mouthfeel. A dry wine with flavours of new wood and stone fruits, nectarine, citrus peel and leesy nut qualities. Well made, complex, lots of mouthfeel and finish.”

95/100 and Gold Medal at New World Wine Awards, 2024

“Bright stonefruit, melon, citrus, nice palate weight and acidity, nice drive. Very elegant wine.”

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

“For its premium Chardonnay label, Clearview aims for a 'big, grunty, upfront' style – and hits the target with ease. It's typically a hedonist's delight – an arrestingly bold, intense, savoury, mealy, complex wine with layers of flavour. Hand-picked from mature vines at Te Awanga, it is fermented and matured in French oak casks (typically 40 to 50 per cent new). Already drinking well, the 2023 vintage is a bright lemon/green, weighty and sweet-fruited wine, with rich, vibrant, stone fruit flavours and a long, harmonious, slightly creamy-textured finish. Best drinking 2027+.”
