2023 Blackenbrook Nelson Pinot Gris

Great buying at this crazy special price. Nelson's famous Moutere clay soils give us another ridiculously good Blackenbrook Pinot Gris. Beautiful peachy pear fruit against mineral acidity, heaps of texture and a backbone that is rounded by a small portion that sees old oak. Wildly over-invested and 'serious' for the price, this Blackenbrook is proper stuff and rare in retail.

Its Origins

Quality wines start in the vineyard. It was with that clear vision that Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach moved to the top of the South Island in 1998 and searched for land for almost two years, before purchasing their 20ha block in Tasman on the scenic Coastal Highway.

The gentle north-facing slope, the Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate were immediately appealing. In the winter of 2000 they grafted their own vines to plant the first 4ha of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in the following winter. Over the years they added Riesling, Gewürztraminer and the Italian red variety Montepulciano into the mix. Born in Switzerland but living in New Zealand since age 9, Daniel began his career as a medical chemist and microbiologist in NZ and the UK, before deciding that winemaking was the path he wanted to go down. He is committed to sustainable/organic winemaking, with very few additions/adjustments made to the wines themselves.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Intense, ripe pinot gris with classic varietal flavours including honeysuckle, freshly harvested pear and stewed apple seasoned with a hint of clove/spice. Well made wine with a perfect sweet/acid balance 08 NOV 2023." Drink 2023 - 2027

4 1/2 Stars M.Cooper

Estate-grown and hand-harvested, the 2023 vintage (4.5*) was handled in a mix of tanks (96 per cent) and old oak barrels (4 per cent). Pale lemon/lime, it is mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity, with strong, ripe stonefruit and spice flavours, showing a distinct touch of complexity, and a dryish (5.3 grams/litre of residual sugar), very harmonious finish. Already very enjoyable, it should be at its best mid-2024+.

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Elegant, enticing, varietal, ripe and fruity with core aromas of brown pear, apple and white nectarine. ON the a palate a satin texture touches first then core flavours of white fleshchard fruits, citrus, apple and and gentle peppery quality. Acidity pulls everything together with a decent weight and just warming alcohol presence. Well made, dry on the finish and ready to drink from 2024 through 2028."
