2022 Vavasour Papa Chardonnay

95 Points James Suckling
In stock
The Papa has been such a success that we've negotiated yet another deal price on the 2022 — which just scored one of the highest points in a NZ chardonnay tasting by international critic James Suckling scoring a 95/100! We first landed this label when the 2021 beat 178 other wines to take first place in the Dish Magazine Chardonnay tasting! Now Vavasour's punchy Awatere style is a go-to favourite among our Chardonnay drinkers. This upper-tier label is sourced entirely from Vavasour's home vineyard where old vines (first planted 1986) are rooted deep into the river valley soils of blue-grey "papa" mudstone. Mouth-filling and yet poised, this is an absolutely delicious wine for any kind of Chardonnay palate. Grab this before it goes!

Its Origins

The Vavasour family traces their ancestry back to the Norman invasion of England. One Vavasour ancestor is thought to have been a 'taster' for William the Conqueror. The Vavasours arrived in New Zealand and established themselves in the Awatere Valley in 1890. Nearly a century later in 1985, Peter Vavasour identified the Awatere Valley as the new frontier for New Zealand wine growing and planted the first grapes there. Vavasour’s first vintage was 1989; within three years they were garnering high accolades and had officially put Awatere Valley on the map of great wine making regions. They have been members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) since 2000.

What The Critics Say

95/100 James Suckling

"So mineral and precise with aromas of lemon peel, grapefruit, oyster shells, orange blossoms and flint. The medium-bodied palate shows a racy acidity and a high-tension mouthfeel that linger, building to a refined and powerful finish. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

Top Wine in the Dish Magazine Chardonnay Tasting, 2024 (2021 vintage)

"A collective “wow” rumbled forth from the judges as they sipped this wine. With its mouthfilling melon, peach purity, beautifully integrated oak, rich, nutty nuances and incredible length of flavour, it’s big, bold, ultra-concentrated and yet showing finely tuned, precise fruit. Thought-provoking and well made, this southern stunner made a massive impression. “What more could you want?” wrote Gordon Russell."

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2021 vintage)

"The wine offers dazzling complexity, showing white flesh nectarine, lemon pith, subtle vanilla, almond meal and cedar characters on the nose with a hint of flinty overtone. It's concentrated and impressively structured in the mouth, delivering multi-layered mouthfeel, backed by bright acidity, finishing refined and captivating."
