2022 Tony Bish Skeetfield Hawkes Bay Chardonnay

97 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A deeply impressive Chardonnay from Tony Bish and the judges at the International Wine Challege think so also awarding it one of only 6 Golds for NZ Chardonnayin the Show. Tony has a special love of the Mendoza Chardonnay clone, which is showcased here in full-textured glory. Old vine, dry-grown fruit from Hawkes Bay's Skeetfield Vineyard is gently handled, so that a year in oak (60% new) only frames an already rich sense of depth and presence. Mouth-filling, opulent and powerful, this is New Zealand Chardonnay just showing off. For an even better effect, just try and age it a few years!

Its Origins

Tony Bish is a legend of New Zealand winemaking who spent decades making such iconic wines as Sacred Hill's Rifleman's Chardonnay. Now he is channeling his Chardonnay expertise into his own labels, which he produces in a stylish urban winery he has set up in Napier. Much of his wine is aimed at delivering classy examples of the the rich and creamy, 'old school' style of Chardonnay. But Tony's incredible touch and experience ensures that each wine is balanced and refined — even with all their big, bold appeal. Meanwhile, Tony's ongoing experimentation in style and technique is producing results such as his deliciously un-oaked "Golden Egg" Chardonnay, and his super premium "Zen" Chardonnay, which is made in an incredible egg-shaped oak vessel.

What The Critics Say

97/100 and Outstanding Cameron Douglas MS

"A complex and appealing bouquet of white fleshed fruits and gun flint, apple and new barrel, layers of fine lees suggesting chalk and fresh unroasted nut. Equally complex and delicious on the palate with a crisp and finely textured mouthfeel, acidity is on point carrying a fine lees and saline texture, flavours of white fleshed stone fruits and citrus are persistent adding weight and finesse, complexity comes from the synergies and purity of fruit, spice and nut. Such a well made wine reflecting its vineyard and expert wine making. With a lengthy finish this wine will reward those who invest and cellar. Best drinking from 2024 through 2030+."

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The classy, single-vineyard 2022 vintage was hand-picked from mature vines at Ohiti, and fermented and matured for a year in French oak barriques. Bright, light lemon/green, it has a fragrant, complex, youthful bouquet. Mouthfilling and savoury, it is a vigorous, finely structured wine, with concentrated, yet delicate, peachy, slightly citrusy and biscuity flavours, oak-derived complexity, fresh acidity and a lengthy finish. Best drinking mid-2025+."

96/100 Bob Campbell MW
