2022 Tony Bish Heartwood Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
Grape
Chardonnay
Its Origins
Tony Bish is a legend of New Zealand winemaking who spent decades making such iconic wines as Sacred Hill's Rifleman's Chardonnay. Now he is channeling his Chardonnay expertise into his own labels, which he produces in a stylish urban winery he has set up in Napier. Much of his wine is aimed at delivering classy examples of the the rich and creamy, 'old school' style of Chardonnay. But Tony's incredible touch and experience ensures that each wine is balanced and refined — even with all their big, bold appeal. Meanwhile, Tony's ongoing experimentation in style and technique is producing results such as his deliciously un-oaked "Golden Egg" Chardonnay, and his super premium "Zen" Chardonnay, which is made in an incredible egg-shaped oak vessel.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Exhibiting complexity with restraint and poise, the wine shows white flesh stone fruit, lemon peel, vanilla and savoury pastry nuances on the nose. The palate is brilliantly focused and concentrated with refined texture backed by bright acidity, finishing persistent and engaging. Gorgeously harmonious and proportioned, promising to evolve graciously. At its best: 2024 to 2034. www.tonybishwines.co.nz. Oct 2023." Drink 2024 - 2034
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Complex and enticing bouquet of fresh stone fruits and ripe citrus, there’s a layer of spice and cashew nut oak adding complexity and depth. As the wine opens out in glass aromas of crumbled stone and burnt butter, extended lees contact and some wild white floral and mineral combinations begin to emerge. Youthful, expressive textures, a moment of reduction with a flinty note, fruit and oak flavours mirror the bouquet framed by a structure of youth and power, concentration and style. A dry lengthy finish, taut and new, flavourful and classic Tony Bish style. Well made with best drinking from late 2024 through 2029+."
19/20 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"Bright, even, pale yellow gold. The nose is gently full and poised, with aromas of roasted hazelnut, toast, butter overlay stonefruit and flint. Full-bodied, aromas of stonefruit melded with pear, roasted hazelnut, toast, buttermilk and smoked flint. The wine has a lushness and fattiness embraced by a creamy yet elegant mouthfeel. The rich, toasty aroma layers are well-proportioned, supported by enlivening acidity to a long, satisfying finish. This charming, oaked Chardonnay is well-balanced and elegant with toasty elements and power. Match with roasted guinea fowl and grilled king prawns over the next 6+ years. Mendoza clone from Bridge Pa Triangle vineyards. Handpicked, 100% barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc. Aged in seasoned 100% Taransaud French oak barriques, 30% new. Full MLF. 19/20 pts (95 pts)."
