A superb and surprising Pinot Noir from Hawkes Bay masters of Cabernet and Merlot, Te Mata. Estate plantings have included Pinot Noir for some time, but recently vine age and winemaking considerations made it possible to release the premium Alma label. With the variety's rising reputation in Hawkes Bay, the Alma is a classy Pinot to drink now or cellar.

Its Origins

Unbeknownst to many, Te Mata have had plantings of Pinot Noir for 20 years, during which time they have experimented with the right treatment of the variety. Alma celebrates Dr James Thomson, a hero of the 1854 Battle of the Alma during the Crimean War and forefather to Te Mata Estate’s Buck family. Knowing the vanquished enemy soldiers had already contracted cholera, Dr Thomson volunteered to tend to their wounds, saving the lives of over four hundred, and sacrificing his own in the process. The medal he was awarded for this selfless act of valour appears on the label of Alma Pinot Noir. -- Originally a farm with homestead established in 1854 by John Chambers, it was his son Bernard who, on return from travels in France, planted vineyards on its north facing hills - which are still in use. In 1919 the Chambers sold and the Te Mata Vineyards company was established, to continue until 1975 when two associates, John Buck and Michael Morris, ended their 8 year search for a winery location by purchasing on the historic Te Mata estate. By remaining firmly rooted in a kind of modern traditional approach - quality focussed wines made with long-term expertise and from estate-only vineyards - Te Mata Estate have risen and risen as New Zealand’s benchmark for cellaring quality. Depending on variety, both their middle and top end wines are consistently capable not only of balance and appeal on release, but of aging for multiple decades.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Alluring and enticing, the wine shows sweet berry, olive, thyme and toasted almond characters, beautifully accented by floral overtones. It’s juicy and finely flowing in the mouth offering elegant texture and layers of delicate tannins, making it refined and sumptuous at the same time. Wonderfully composed and poised with a prolonged velvety finish. At its best: 2025 to 2037. $50.00. www.temata.co.nz. Jan 2024." Drink 2025 - 2037

95/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin

"The 2022 Alma Pinot Noir is supple and ripe, with an infusion of silty tannins and black tea. This is a gorgeous wine, totally svelte and structural at once, populated by a saturation of red fruits. There are pomegranate pearls, pink peppercorns, poached strawberry and even a hint of sumac. This is delicious. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." Drink 2023 - 2037

95/100 The Real Review, Huon Hooke

"Good depth of bright red-purple colour, pristine aromas of sweetly ripe black cherry with a kiss of spicy oak, fresh and bright primary fruit leads the way, the palate intense and medium-full for pinot noir, backed with surprising tannins that give a solid backbone and cleansing after-grip. A serious pinot noir that will reward cellaring for several years. 08 JAN 2024." Drink 2024 - 2036
