2022 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie Ampodium

Its Origins
Legal academic, property dealer and vigneron, René Rostaing crafts some of the finest Côte Rôties on the market today. He has owned 2 hectares in the Côte Blonde and La Landone since the 1970s but fortune has blessed him through his inheritance of four hectares of superbly sited vineyards from his father in law Albert Dervieux and another 1.4 hectares of particularly old vines from his uncle Marius Gentaz. He now has 7.4 hectares which in Côte Rôtie terms is a significant holding. Rostaing is firmly in the modernist camp of Côte Rôtie producers, destemming the majority of his fruit and being one of the first producers to ferment using vinomatics (horizontal automatic vinifiers). However he dislikes the overt taste of new oak and uses a maximum of 15% in the maturation process. All the wines are bottled unfiltered.
What The Critics Say
94/100 James Suckling
"At once fresh and deep with excellent precision, this is a wonderful Cote-Rotie that leaps across the palate. Stacks of fresh forest berries, delicate pepper and red roses. The fine tannins build beautifully in the long, vibrant finish. Excellent aging potential. A cuvee of syrah from more than 20 plots across the appellation. Drinkable now, but best from 2026."
91-93/100 Jeb Dunnuck
"Tasted from multiple barrels, the 2022 Côte Rôtie Ampodium will easily be an outstanding wine. All of the barrels had saturated purple hues, terrific purity, lots of both red and blue fruits, integrated oak, and ripe, polished tannins. It's going to be a smoking good base cuvée from this talented family."

"Cask samples tasted at the domaine. Sample 1: Blend of sites. Blood and graphite on the nose, gravel and spice as well. The palate has taut tannins, a richness and density as well as grip and firmness throughout. Savoury and dark and finishes rounder than it starts. Very primary and introverted, needs time. Sample 2: Neve. Lovely blue fruit on the nose, juicy and has a liquorice note. The tannins are firm yet broad on the palate, still tight but has lovely fruit beneath. Rounded and with a graphite, earthy, bloody note lurking. Youthful. Sample 3: Leyat. Meat and fig and graphite. Taut tannins and meaty, stony and with a gamey edge on the tightly coiled finish. (AC)." Drink 2028 - 2040
