Its Origins

"First Drop Wines HQ is in the striking 'Home of the Brave' building on the southern edge of Nuriootpa in the Provenance Barossa precinct. John Retsas is the man behind the dynamic brand, with its delicious wines sourced from vineyards across the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. There is a heavy emphasis on the 'alternative' (appropriate) varieties with Italian and Portuguese grapes making their presence felt; of course, shiraz, grenache, cabernet sauvignon and mataro also play a role, with a contemporary slant." Dave Brookes.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Weekend Australian Best Reds of 2024, Nick Ryan

"Give a wine a name like this and you’ll want to be sure you can live up to naturally high expectations. Thankfully, John Retsas is a man who always delivers. Built on everything the world loves about Barossa Shiraz – richness, generosity, deep wells of fruit flavour – this has always been a wine that punches way above its weight, and long may it continue to do so.”

92/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Dave Brookes

"Terrific value here. Bright crimson with plenty of crunchy red and black berry fruits, baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate, pressed flowers, crushed rock and panforte. Mid-weighted with a light savoury lean, chocolatey tannins and a medium-length finish that shows some lovely cream oak and pure fruit." Drink 2024 - 2034

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2021 vintage)

"Richly fruited and inviting, the bouquet shows dark and purple fruit intensity, toasted nut, warm spice and floral aromas, leading to a superbly weighted palate that's succulent and silky. Wonderfully flavoursome and satisfying."
