Surely one of our best NZ Sauvignon Blanc wines. Ex-cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd is a legend of the variety, and here he presents his fully serious expression. From top-stream fruit that is wild fermented in 100% oak, mostly old but with just a spicing of new wood, this wine offers complexity now or the potential to age extremely well. A wilder yet more sophisticated beast than the usual tank-fermented Marlborough Sav, this is a food wine of extreme quality.

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

"The flagship wine from renowned winemaker Kevin Judd, who founded this winery with wife Kimberley in 2009 after 25 years at Cloudy Bay. Sourced from sites across the region, it is fermented using wild yeasts in old French oak barriques where it rests on lees for six months. Roger Jones: Stylish balance of fruit to herbaceous notes, multi-layered with a crunchy texture, mellow yellow summer field flowers. The elegance at the end is quite remarkable. Freddy Bulmer: Attractive and clean on the nose, plenty of primary fruit but also a nice amount of savoury character from the oak. Well balanced and really quite a serious wine. Cat Lomax: Expressive, punchy nose. Great concentration, tonnes of luscious Sauvignon fruit supported by very smart use of oak. Tastes like pricey white Bordeaux. Delicious."

"Light-medium yellow, bright colour; there is a twinge of VA on the first aroma, then some nutty barrel-ferment notes and overt varietal character is taking a back seat. A rich, spicy, complex wine with layers of flavour and superior depth and backbone. There's a vein of volatility running through due no doubt to a wild ferment, but the wine works well as a whole. Seriously deep and generous, high-energy and rewardingly complex. Should also reward some ageing."
