2024 Easthope Home Block Syrah

92 Points John Caro

The 2021 vintage of this Syrah won Best Red in Metro Magazine! It's a classy and characterful red from the Hawkes Bay family vineyard of ex-Craggy winemaker, Rod Easthope. These vines are tended by the "vested hands" of Rod and his wife Emma to produce a Syrah of uncompromising boutique quality. With a lovely depth of bright, gently savoury fruit flavours, the Easthope Syrah overdelivers in appeal and potential at this very ordinary price. Try this!

Its Origins

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2024 vintage

"In the glass, it’s a deep garnet with electric crimson edges. Aromatically, it’s immediate and captivating—blueberry, lavender, aniseed, and a flicker of black pepper. The palate is vivid and finely structured: lush fruit threaded with tannin and tension. A Syrah that’s expressive and elegant on its own, yet built to sing alongside beef, lamb, or wild game. -- From our elevated inland vineyard at Mangatahi, the Home Block Syrah is always a little different—thanks to its 165-metre altitude, north-facing slope, and deep red gravel soils. It’s a site that delivers distinction year after year. In 2024, nature made us work for it. Spring came late and windblown, with a poor fruit set slashing yields. But the payoff came in summer: a long, warm ripening that concentrated flavour into every small, dark berry."

Best Wine and Top 10 in Metro Magazine (2021 vintage)
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2021 vintage)

"A core of dark purple and ruby hues lead to a bouquet of fresh and baked raspberry, dark plums, fragrant spices and mild toasty barrel qualities with a whisper of wood smoke. Delicious on the palate with a core of dark red fruit flavours and fine savoury spice qualities. Violets and black currant, toasty barrel spices of clove and vanilla all leading to a long and conmplex finish."
