Its Origins
Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.
What The Critics Say
96/100 James Suckling
"Very suave with exactly the dreamy-creamy quality and elegance that the world associates with Puligny-Montrachet. I love the rich fruit sweetness on the mid-palate, then the decisively dry and delicately chalky long finish."
95/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW
"Bouchard owns 0.40 hectares of this premier cru just across the road from Meursault Perrières — the grapes were often sold as Perrières in the past. The Bouchard parcel is planted with very old vines in well-exposed, rocky soils. In 2022, it delivered a 'Meursault-style' Puligny, with a lovely balance between the 'ripe apple/butter/hazelnut' tendencies and the flintier, more linear Puligny style. The combination is thrillingly good. The wine will open nicely in three to five years and should drink well for 20 after that." Drink 2025 - 2045
94/100 John Caro (store owner)
"This little known Puligny-Montrachet is produced from the premier cru vineyard of Les Chalumaux. The parcel lies at the summit of the hill, not far from “Les Truffières”. The south-east facing plot has ideal exposure, catching as much sunlight as the day-time permits. These vineyards once belonged to the Chalumeau family, hence its name. The vineyard is composed of austere clay and chalk-rich soil which produces a very clean and elegantly styled Puligny. Bouchard only produces this in very small quantities so it is rarely tasted."
