A serious Syrah from the legendary Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay. Deep and rich in style, this wine has a sense of both scale and elegance, with a fine-tuned palate of lush fruit and fine tannins and a bright, spicy aromatic. Classy and complete, this is real value straight from the Gravels.

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Sleek, intense, fruit-forward syrah with impressive density and restrained power. From an excellent Hawke's Bay vintage, the wine shows youthful enthusiasm and long-term potential. 11 Jan 2024." Drink 2024 - 2032

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2017 vintage)

"A gorgeous rendition of the variety; beautifully perfumed bouquet shows sweet cherry, dark plum, vanilla, cedar and subtle cocoa characters, leading to a concentrated palate that is refined and poised. The wine offers pristine fruit flavours together with a delightfully flowing mouthfeel, elegantly structured by juicy acidity and polished tannins. At its best: now to 2024."
