2021 Pegasus Bay Merlot Cabernet

Grape
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
Its Origins
Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Richly coloured core of dark purples and reds with stains in the tears lead to a bouquet and palate youth, power and concentration. As the wine touches the palate there’s a distinctive flinty and reductive quality, this will dissipate as the wine ages in your cellar. Flavours of dark berries and plums, violets and blue fruits then layers of wood spices and smoke. Excellent tannin and acid line surround the core fruit flavours. There are many natural synergies between the fruit and wine maker’s touch. A wine that simply needs time to settle and begin to age, the integration is underway. Best drinking from 2028 through 2038+." Drink 2028 - 2038+
94/100 or 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"Full, deep ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is gentle and rich, packed with aromas of blackberry, cassis and strawberry, intermixed with cigar, leather, vine leaf and an amalgam of spices. Full-bodied, aromas of blackberry and cassis melded with plum, strawberry, vine leaf, leather, clove, nutmeg, and cigar linger. The dense mouthfeel is packed with finely woven ripe, firm tannins, unveiling rich spice, leather and cigar nuances. Warm spices interlace lively acidity and lend a powerful, sustained finish. This Merlot Cabernet blend possesses concentrated fruit and fine lines, showing power and grace on a well-structured tannin framework. Match with beef stew and venison over the next 10 years. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, then pressed into French oak barriques, 20% new oak, aged for 18 months, underwent MLF. Predominately Merlot, with the remainder comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. 18.5+/20 pts (94 pts) Aug 2024." Drink 2024 - 2034
93/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Inky red with a seductive velvet texture and flavours that resemble Christmas cake, vanilla, chocolate, coffee and mixed spices. Remarkably ripe and attractive wine that promises to age well but is drinking well now 19 Aug 2024." Drink 2024 - 2027
