2021 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Riesling

92 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A light-bodied and delicately dry Riesling from the cooler climate of Margaret River. Lime and slightly spicey florals are a leap from the more austere South Australians. It's a little more Kiwi in that way, though with something different from the Western Australian soils and conditions. Deceptively layered, this is a serious white for aperitif or lighter fish dishes.

Its Origins

Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. The initial vineyards were planted by hand over a five year period from 1975. Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.

What The Critics Say

92/100 JamesSuckling.com, Nick Stock (2019 vintage)

"A wealth of apples, pears and citrus fruit here with a fresh-herb edge that stamps the region in play. The palate has very tightly aligned, dry lemon and lime flavors, all so neatly locked in. No wonder this wine has a cult following! Drink or hold. Screw cap."

90/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2019 vintage)

"This is emphatically not broken and equally emphatically does not need to be fixed. It's a much appreciated wine by Leeuwin Estate and its legion of supporters/addicts alike."
