2021 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia

Grape
Sangiovese
Its Origins
"Considering its modest price, Rancia remains one the most fairly priced, cellar worthy wines in the world." (Antonio Galloni, Felsina Restrospective). The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.
What The Critics Say
95+/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Rancia is the rst vintage in which Rancia moves from Riserva to Gran Selezione. More importantly, Fèlsina appears to be back on track after two years, during which Rancia underperformed because of the inclusion of a parcel that did not work in the blend and contributed a slight vegetal character. The 2021 marries power and nesse in the way only Rancia can. Black cherry, leather, game, spice, licorice, tobacco and grilled herbs are all nely knit in a brooding yet elegant Gran Selezione that delivers the goods. Superb." Drink 2026 - 2046
95/100 James Suckling
"Cherries, black cherries, lemon peel, and vetiver define the main profile. Blackcurrants, raspberries, and pomegranate take center stage. Medium-full body, with biting tannins and a very persistent finish. Best from 2025."
94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner
"Now upgraded to Gran Selezione status, the Fèlsina 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Rancia shows a dark fruit profile with blackcurrants and wild plum. Those black and purple fruits cede to mineral notes of crushed slate or iron ore. The finish is dusty and dry because those mineral notes are reinforced by powdery tannins." Drink 2024 - 2040
