2021 Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Syrah

Its Origins
Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. Once known as the "Block 14" Syrah, the Gimblett Gravels Syrah is now a wine made using multiple parcels from the vineyard. Still 100% Syrah, the blending of these different parcels combine to create a wine that is truly distinct and appealing. The vines originate from a Heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand approximately 150 years ago.
What The Critics Say
94/100 James Suckling
"Very attractive blackberry and brambleberry aromas with hints of oyster shell and ink aromas that follow through to a medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Nice dryness and fine austerity at the end giving a crushed stone sensation. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
97/100 Decanter Wine Awards (2020 vintage)
"The Gimblett Gravels endeavour is a model for terroir research outside traditional regions, and recent generous vintages have really begun to pay off for this disciplined private association of Hawke's Bay wine growers. This is glorious Syrah: deep, dense and black-red in colour, with classic varietal aromas which combine inner urgency with sweet seduction. On the palate the wine offers a cascade of fruit, with tempered acidity and shy tannins. It's the grain to that fruit which impresses so: primary (plum, currant and sloe) yet nuanced, too, perfumed to the last drop and with a sense of stone behind the fruit to lend it dignity and keep you coming back to the glass for more."
96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2019 vintage)
"Trophy winner at the Hawke's Bay Wine Show. Mainly MS clone, fermented with 20% whole-bunch, 15 months in oak (25% new). Dense syrah with red-fleshed plum, cassis, a hint of floral and black pepper. It sits on the cusp between blockbuster and finesse with a nod in both directions. Graphite tannins. Great now but will age. 19 OCT 2020." Drink 2020 - 2029
