2021 Cloudy Bay Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc

96 Points Bob Campbell MW
In stock
The long-time NZ classic of the 'oaked' style, Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc is all about weight and complexity. Top quality fruit was harvested in the cool of night and fermented in mostly old oak, adding heaps of texture but only a touch of 'oaky' character to the many layers of ripe fruit, mineral and yeast-influenced complexity. Impressive!

Its Origins

Established in 1985 by Cape Mentelle, Cloudy Bay Vineyards is situated in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. This unique and cool wine region enjoys a maritime climate with the longest hours of sunshine of any place in New Zealand. Cloudy Bay has estate vineyards located at prime sites within the Wairau Valley, and long-term supply agreements with five Wairau Valley growers. The main varieties grown are sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, and pinot noir with lesser quantities of gewurztraminer, Riesling, and pinot gris.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Distinctive wine with passionfruit, gooseberry, tree fruits and citrus/lime zest characters. Purity and power with an ethereal texture and lingering finish. Captures the essence of the variety and delivers it with a unique twist of its own. Sauvignon with cellaring potential 30 Nov 2023." Drink 2023 - 2028

96/100 Stephen Wong MW

"Bright gold. Musky apple aromas, herbaceous overtones, red peppers. Savoury tomato. A hint of oak and sweet almond, a touch of caramel/butterscotch on the back. Broadly complex, layered fruit and green apple skins with a chewy, crisp finish. Lovely acidity, long, persistent, tangy apple. Perfumed, slow to unfurl. Powerful but restrained. Very long. Overall effect is one of impact, punchy herbaceous, closed fruit, minerality, steely, very concentrated 29 Dec 2023." Drink 2025 - 2029

"Te Koko is arguably the wine that launched the concept of premium Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand in the 1980s—no mean feat. On the nose, this 2021 Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc leads with pink grapefruit, nashi pear, white pepper, layers of crushed shells and brine, with hints of vanilla pod and star anise. In the mouth, all of the above with additional cut fennel, suggestions of marzipan, graphite and white pepper. There is a gentle lees texture and brilliant length of flavor. Excellent wine. The only reason you could possibly not like this wine is if you don't like Sauvignon Blanc, and even then, I'd insist that you try it. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." Drink 2023 - 2036
