2021 Boneline Waimanu Pinot Noir
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and its offerings.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)
"Complex and detailed bouquet with aromas of wood spice and mineral, dark red berry fruits and fine toasty barrel spice of clove and vanilla. Dry, complex, textured and rather delicious on the palate with a fine tannin and core red fruit flavoured mouthfeel. Acidity carries flavours through the palate accentuating primary cherry and plum flavours then toasty spices from barrel. The mineral attributes are a constant throughout the tasting. Well made with excellent drinking on its own or with food. Best drinking from 2022 through 2030+."
94/100 Wine Enthusiast, Christina Pickard (2019 vintage)
"Distinctive forest berry aromas of wild blueberry, cranberry and strawberry—with subtle florals, baking spices and warm earth—open this Pinot, from a geologically fascinating site in New Zealand's Waipara region, north of Christchurch. Several years in bottle has unraveled the palate into something silky and poised. There's a plushness here, and no shortage of fruit, with beautiful freshness and fine tannin structure. It should continue on a graceful path until 2030 or so."
Jo Burzynska (2014 vintage)
"For me the jewel in The Boneline's crown is the elegant Waimanu pinot noir. Its silken red cherry and cranberry fruit is infused with aromatic notes of sweet spices and florals, along with mineral and subtle savoury undertones, underpinned by bright acid and fine tannins."
