2020 Planeta Eruzione 1614 Carricante

The history of Etna is marked by the historic eruptions which have shaped it. That of 1614 is legendary, it lasted 10 years, the longest ever recorded, halting just on the border of the Sciaranuova vineyard. From an altitude of 815-860 metres above sea level, this special white from Mount Etna in Sicily is composed of the increasingly famous local grape Carricante. With green and ripe fruit against perfect acid freshness and an effortlessly mineral background from the local volcanic soils, this wine is as layered and nuanced as they come for anywhere near this price - with a special charm and complexity that is drawing the world's attention to Sicily and Etna.
$53.99 in mixed 6+ or $59.99 per bottle

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say

93/100 WinesCritic.com, Raffaele Vecchione

"Notes of medlar, flint, lime peel and mixed white flowers emerge from the glass. On the palate, medium-full body, enveloping structure and a pleasant finish of medium persistence."

93/100 James Suckling, Zekun Shuai

"Intense nose with hints of oatmeal, kernels, white nuts and minerals to the braised lemons and apples. Fresh, tangy and attractively saline on the palate with bright, zesty acidity and a nice phenolic kick at the end. Excellent concentration and salinity here. Drink now.

91/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"The 2020 Carricante Eruzione 1614 blends richness with vibrancy, as ripe peach and melon are enhanced with honeyed florals and hazelnut. It's soft and supple, yet with a core of zesty acidity to balance as tropical citrus tones swirl under an air of exotic inner florals. The 2020 finishes clean and with a mineral twang, leaving suggestions of lime and fresh mint. The Eruzione 1614 Carricante is always a standout in my tastings, which makes sense as its 10% dollop of Riesling Renano adds unexpected energy." Drink 2023 - 2027
