2020 Pegasus Bay Merlot Cabernet
Grape
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
Its Origins
Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Complex and concentrated bouquet of plums and vanilla, blackberry fruits and clove, fresh leather, smoky oak and violets. There’s compote quality, a freshness and power. The softer merlot textures touch the palate first with cacao and chocolate, plums and spices that follow. The cabernet delivers power and back bone, , blackberry and baked bell-pepper, some tobacco and more violets. Delicious and new, complex and dry, lengthy and well made. Best drinking from 2025 through 2034+." Drink 2025 - 2035+
94/100 or 18.5+/20 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"Deep ruby red with a purple hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is full and generous, with lush aromas of cassis, plum, bramble and herb melded with an amalgam of spice and leather. Full-bodied, cassis, plum and bramble aromas entwined with rich herbs, tobacco leaf, leather, graphite and star anise. The wine is concentrated and complex, with densely weaved fine-grained tannins, unfolding a hint of dark cocoa. Lively acidity provides freshness and vitality to the dark-toned, rich palate. This Merlot Cabernet possesses a rich palate of dark fruit, herbs and integrated oak spice, leaving a powerful, lengthy linger. Match with tomahawk and beef brisket over the next 8+ years. Predominantly Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. Fermented naturally in stainless steel to 13.5% alc, aged in French oak barriques for 18 months, 15% new oak. 18.5+/20 pts (94 pts) July 2023 RRP $35."
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"It's gorgeously ripe and lifted on the nose, showing blackcurrant, tobacco, cedary oak, tar and mixed spice aromas, leading to a wonderfully flavoursome palate delivering excellent weight and plump mouthfeel. Well structured by beautifully infused tannins, it's bold yet stylish with a persistent robust finish. At its best: now to 2032. $35.00. www.pegasusbay.com. June 2023." Drink 2023 - 2032
