2020 Neudorf Moutere Pinot Gris

94 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
One of the best Pinot Gris in the country, this is rich in texture with loads of crisp fruit flavours but hardly any sweetness. While easy to love, this wine suits high brow terms rather well -- such as 'perfectly poised' with beautiful 'mineral layering', along with that mere touch of generous fruit so typical of a classy Gris. Great for any occasion, but especially delicious with crayfish.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Complex, pure, enticing and intriguing bouquet with layers of elderflower, fruit spice then fresh green pears and honeysuckle, some apple and leesy complexity. Even better on the palate with a fine mealy texture, fresh acid line and a core of flavours that mirror the nose. Balanced, even, lengthy and delicious. Drinking perfectly from today and through 2025+. An excellent food wine choice as well, suited to salads and vegan dishes, seafood pasta and tomato consommé. " Drink 2021 - 2025+

93/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie

"A fair bit of effort put into the pinot gris at Neudorf. This works at a number of speeds, texture is serious, flavour is detailed and compact, green melon, green mango, mint and grassy notes, fennel too. Really lovely. Great lick of chalky pucker. Sophisticated stuff here." Drink 2021 - 2024

16/20 Jancis Robinson

"Powerfully perfumed and pretty fruity with white-currant fruit. Good balance of the light sweetness and fresh acidity. Likely to last pretty well. Only those who insist that all their wines are bone dry will object." Drink 2021 -2024
