A wonderful cru from the top of the boutique Barolo food chain. Monvigliero is the most prestigious cru in Verduno, an austere and complex red which is produced from 45 year old vines on Fratelli Alessandria's wonderful, south-facing slope of calecerous limestone. From the family's most prized site, the Monvigliero is a treasure to secret away for the medium to very long term.

Its Origins

Crowning the small hilltop village of Verduno, the elegant 18th century cantina Fratelli Alessandria produces approx 5,000 wine cases from 14 hectares; including the wine crus of Monvigliero in Verduno & Gramolere in Monforte d'Alba in Piedmont. Their Barolo wines were recognised by King Carlo Alberto in 1843, identifying a notable quality that continues to be enhanced by the arrival of 5th generation Vittore, aside his uncle Alessandro and father Gian Battista. They are also proud producers of the Pelaverga wine, a charming and elegant pepper-scented thing from grapes grown almost in exclusivity around Verduno. -- Vittore's arrival in 2001, post commercial and oenological studies at Torino University, coincided with a period of positive change. 'More attention to detail' is how Vittore explains the improvements that have taken place over the past decade. No more so than in the vineyard, now a picture of health and source of bright fruit from appropriately low yields. 2001 was also the year that their single Monforte cru 'Gramolere' was released, echoing a regional trend. In the cantina: new static stainless steel tanks, better temperature control, the addition of a few French 500 litre tonneaux, while persevering with 15/20 day wild yeast fermentations & 30 hectolitre botte (slavonian & French oak) ageing have all combined to promote sales of bottled wine and thereby reduce their reliance upon sales to the bulk market; now down to approx 15% of production.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Wine Enthusiast, Jeff Porter

"Crushed wild strawberries, raspberries, and elegant floral notes captivate the senses. Tart red cherries and cranberries dance on the palate, accompanied by a delicate herbaceous touch. This pretty Barolo showcases the beauty of Nebbiolo with its vibrant acidity and refined tannins. A transformative wine with a balance so perfect, it would score 10s in the Olympics. Drink now - 2045."

95/100 Kerin O'Keefe

"You’ll find aromas recalling ripe dark-skinned fruit, violet, forest floor and brown exotic spice on the alluring 2020 Monvigliero from Fratelli Alessandria. Full-bodied and elegantly structured, the succulent, enveloping palate features ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, baking spice and licorice before a saline mineral close. A backbone of velvety tannins provides support. It’s already almost at the start of its ideal drinking window where it will maintain for another decade or so. Drink 2026–2035. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe March 2024." Drink 2026 - 2035

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Verduno. Cask sample. Palish youthful ruby. Subtle, aromatic nose hinting at balsamic raspberry, cardamom and stony, minerally notes. Supple and generous palate that is not fully open yet. Very long, juicy and still embryonic and with fantastic fine, gravelly tannins on the finish. Complete, but will need time to develop in the bottle. (WS)" Drink 2026 - 2038
