95 Points James Suckling

An icon of complex Kiwi Sav that's more like a top French Sancerre. Dog Point are from the early Cloudy Bay orbit, so this oak-age style is similar to by Cloudy's Te Koko except that it has zero new oak and malolactic creaminess, making it an extremely fine, intense and complex white. The best of new and old world Sauvignon in one bottle. Enjoy with food.

Its Origins

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.

What The Critics Say

95/100 James Suckling

"Layers of crushed stones, smoked almonds, green apples, lemon pith, white pepper, licorice and oyster shells. It's so powerful and concentrated. Tightly wound and phenolic with a medium body and sharp acidity. Intense, and just keeps going. Always a sophisticated and complex sauvignon blanc. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

94+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Erin Larkin

"The 2020 Section 94 is today five years from its harvest, and it shows a preponderance of yellow fruits, exotic spices, layers of cloves, star anise and fennel, with white cloth and beeswax. It's a powerful, tightly coiled wine of great length and complexity. These evolve favorably in the future, so drinking the estate Sauvignon Blanc in its youth is recommended, while you allow this to age and settle. This is a very impressive wine. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." Drink 2025 - 2039

93/100 Wine Enthusiast, Christina Pickard

"From one of Marlborough's most distinctive producers, this single site Sauvignon Blanc is aged and fermented in older French oak barrels in the Pouilly-Fumé style. The resulting wine is golden hued with opulent aromas of roasted nuts, grilled pineapple, lemon oil and gun smoke. The palate is equally rich but restrained, countered by mouthwatering acidity, with focus and flavor depth that lingers long on the finish. It's a Sauvignon made like a Chardonnay, so it won't be to everyone's tastes, but this bottling, from a strong vintage, finds great balance and could cellar for several years."
