2020 Butterworth Layline Martinborough Pinot Noir

94 Points Bob Campbell MW
In stock
The sale of a winery means a massive clearance on this serious Martinborough Pinot Noir. Bob Campbell gave it a score of 94/100 where it sits alongside other 2020 Kiwi Pinots that average $55.83! Julicher Pinot has been a hit with our customers, and that quality was continued under new owners the Butterworths of sailing fame. But they have now resold and the result is a warehouse full of Butterworth-labelled wine that urgently needs a new home. This is a savoury Martinborough Pinot with big reviews. For this price, it's an absolute no-brainer. Get in quick!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

"The Julicher family, the original founders were like a lot of the pioneering families in the New Zealand wine industry – hardworking immigrants who arrived with little and looked to make a big impact with their new life. What they lacked in knowledge they made up for with charm and bloody-mindedness. Wim Julicher (Yu-li-ka) dug every hole and planted every grape. Wim originally planted the Te Muna vineyard as an Olive Grove but the site’s unique aspect made it far too cold for the poor olive trees. Luckily for us, it creates the perfect amount of pressure for the divine struggle required to produce world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. After twenty-five years of experimenting, cultivating, nurturing, and picking up more than their fair share of gold medals, the time was right for the next custodians Brad and Warren Butterworth to take the helm. While the Butterworth Family is world-famous for their sailing achievements, their viticultural heritage dates back to the founding days of the New Zealand wine industry. The original 1890’s vineyard property is still in the family today." New Zealand wine Navigator

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Intense pinot noir with red-fleshed plum, dark cherry, berry, toasted oak, and anise/spice flavours supported by fine, ripe tannins. A benchmark Martinborough wine from what appears to have been an excellent vintage." Drink 2022 - 2030

5 stars and 94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Gorgeously complex and enticing on the nose with ripe cherry, smoked game, violet and subtle cedar characters, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate delivering terrific fruit purity combined with seductive savoury nuances. Silky, flowing and delectably appealing. At its best: now to 2030."

5 Stars and 93/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"This has an elegantly full bouquet, gently concentrated with aromas of plums and dark cherries melded with a hint of savoury, earthy nuance, and sweet spice. Medium-bodied, delicate plums, dark cherries lead the palate with dark roses, cinnamon, cardamom and sweet vanilla, unfolding savoury, earthy soil elements. The palate has concentration, fine-grained tannins extraction coated with a light, silky grip. The fruit flavours are ripe with good balance and integration of acidity. This elegant, harmonious Pinot Noir possesses an immediate appeal of ripe fruit and a silky, spicy palate. Match with lamb koftas and pork stew over the next 5 years. Handpicked, destemmed into open top vats, fermented to 13.5% alc, on skins for a minimum of 20 days, aged in seasoned French oak barrels for 10 months, underwent MLF. No fining. Vegan friendly."
