Its Origins
The two hands label is derived by the hands of South Australian businessmen Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz. Michael laid the foundation of Two Hands through his extensive extensive experience in marketing Australian wine in the US (for other producers). On the principle that if big is good, bigger is better, the style of the wines has been aimed squarely at the palate of the American palate and the American wine critics- especially Robert Parker Jr and Wine Spectators Harvey Steiman. Grapes are sourced from the Barossa Valley (where the business has 15ha of shiraz), McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Langhorne Creek and Padthaway. The emphasis of the wines is on sweet fruit and soft tannin structure, all signifying the precise marketing strategy of what is a very successful business.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2018 vintage)
"Everything is right with this wine. The colour is full but clear, the bouquet composed and welcoming, the medium-bodied palate continuing the theme, dark berry fruits doing all the lifting (this is only medium-bodied, in any event), the mouthfeel juicy, the tannins fine-spun, the length exemplary." 93/100 Thew Wine Front, Gary Walsh (2018 vintage)
"It’s been quite a while since I tried a wine from Two Hands. This comes via their distributor, Joval, via the most excellent person that is Damien Smith. — It’s quite pretty for a gnarly dude, with a lavender perfume, grilled peanut, liquorice and blueberry/raspberry juiciness. Medium to full-bodied, but not so heavy, a fleshy chocolate and nut laden flavour profile, sweet blue and black fruit, with ripe silty tannin, balanced acidity, and a long succulent finish. Strange to say, it almost comes over like Torbreck Woodcutters used to taste, with some dried apricot and floral things in the aftertaste. It’s certainly on the more comely side of Barossa Shiraz, but it’s fun and easy to sink your teeth into."
91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2018 vintage)
"Lovely mixed berry notes appear on the nose of the 2018 Gnarly Dudes Shiraz. It's a prototypical Barossa Shiraz made with modern sensibilities, marrying subtle hints of French oak with bold fruit. Hints of mint and licorice add interest, while the full-bodied palate is ripe and creamy without going over the top."
