2019 Esk Valley The Hillside Malbec Merlot Cab Franc

Grape
Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Syrah
Its Origins
The original facilities were erected in 1933, called Glenvale, and after decades of fortified wine production it wasn’t until the late 1970s - still very early in the New Zealand premium table wine market - that Glenvale created the Esk Valley label to meet that demand. Price wars in the 1980’s saw Glenvale perish and the Esk Valley label picked up by George Fistonich of Villa Maria. Although it has been able to operate as a separate winery and develop its increasingly historic and iconic position, the investment and backing of the Villa Maria group has ensured it access not only to the best personnel and technology, but the best markets. Today, Esk Valley is a benchmark of elegant, quality-focussed Hawkes Bay production and its ‘Terraces’ Bordeaux Blend is a towering classic of New Zealand red wine.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Attractive and distinctive red with a nice combination of rich, concentrated flavours and raciness. Youthful red with bright red and black berry, fresh herb and nutty oak flavours. Moderately accessible now but with obvious cellaring potential. 03 Jun 2021." Drink 2021 - 2032
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Delicious and powerful full-bodied core with aromas of dark berries and chocolate, blackberries and plums, forest berries and baking spices of oak - clove and cinnamon, bacon and vanilla then tobacco. Equally full, rich and tasty on the palate with flavours that mirror the nose; firm tannins and youthful acid line and stony earthy quality that layers in minerality and complexity. A bold expression with fruit, flavour, texture, power and intensity. Best drinking from 2022 through 2030+."
