2019 Clearview Hawkes Bay Reserve Chardonnay
In 1986 Tim Turvey purchased a property at Te Awanga, Hawke’s Bay. Together with business partner Helma van den Berg, they hand grafted and planted the first vines in the winter of 1988. Clearview Estate Winery Ltd was established for the first red wine vintage in 1989. Vineyard plantings continued at 3 acres per annum. Tim and Helma also designed and built the winery, adding to the cellar door and restaurant as the business grew. The Estate grows 11 grape varieties from 19.4 hectares (48 acres) of Te Awanga vineyards. They intensively manage and prune their vines for low yields of quality fruit. The seaside location has a moderating influence and they often enjoy an extended ripening period well into autumn. The clay and loam soils sit over deep beds of free draining river shingle. Leased land at Gimblett Road provides Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Combining opulence and grace, this stunning chardonnay shows grilled peach, fig, vanilla and cedar characters on the nose with nuances of grapefruit and gun smoke. The impressively concentrated palate exhibits outstanding intensity and complexity, superbly enhanced by velvety texture and beautifully pitched acidity. A complete package with loads of delicious flavours. At its best: 2022 to 2032. $45.00. www.clearviewestate.co.nz. Nov 2020." Drink 2022 - 2032
94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2018 vintage)
"An elegant and lively example of this classic wine with grapefruit, citrus, oyster shell, mineral, struck flint and subtle brioche and bran biscuit flavours. A high-energy chardonnay with a mouth-watering backbone of fruity acidity. 22 AUG 2019. Drink 2019 - 2025
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2018 vintage)
"A brilliant sheen with deep straw and gold hues. The aromas are striking, familiar, seductive and enticing with suggestions of roasted yellow stone fruits and baked apple, a dry stone and sandy gravel earthy line, plenty of oak with a raw sugar, vanilla and toasty slightly smoky oak and sea air. Full-bodied with a creamy texture contrasted by textures of acidity, lees and alcohol. The best part about this wine is the persistent energy, texture and flavours. Fine oak tannins and long finish." Drink 2019 - 2024
