2019 Azelia Barolo San Rocco

94 Points Parker's Wine Advocate
In stock
A relatively intense and muscular Cru Barolo from Azelia. The single vineyard San Rocco introduces denser flavours to the Azelia style, with deeper fruit notes against subtle savoury/salty complexities and gripping mineral tannins. With the stucture and power from the famous Serralunga soils, Azelia's San Rocco is impressive wine that remains approachable in the not too distant future.

Its Origins

Alongside Massolino the barolos from Azelia are eye-watering bargains in the fine wine world. Anyone with a love of the nebbiolo grape should search out these under-valued Barolos for they are some of the most age- worthy wines in the world. In 1920 Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino began to vinify part of the grapes produced in the family's vineyards, a small rural reality in the heart of the Langhe region, in Castiglione Falletto. His son Alfonso started enthusiastically to bottle the wine produced and thanks to Luigi's father, Lorenzo, with perseverance and willpower, the wines were for the first time exported. The Azienda Agricola Azelia, in the centre of the area of Barolo production, is nowadays composed of 16 hectares and it produces, on average, 80,000 bottles per year. Luigi is supported by his wife Lorella and his son Lorenzo, who bears the name of his grandfather and who represents the fifth generation of wine producers. The family management is essential as it permits an extreme precision in every step of the production.

What The Critics Say

94+/100 Parkers Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"San Rocco is a small MGA located on the northern side of Serralunga d'Alba with steep slopes that open toward Cerretta with clay and limestone. The 2019 Barolo San Rocco (with 7,300 bottles made) benefits from tighter space and a protected microclimate to produce powerful wines. However, this vintage certainly needs more time in bottle and is nowhere near expressing its full potential now. The bouquet is rigid and unyielding at this time. This is a characteristic of San Rocco. Drink 2025-2045"

94/100 Decanter, Aldo Fiordelli

“Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino prolong the maceration for up to 60 days, and ageing in botti for 30 months. This Margheria is thus more concentrated, big and powerful compared to other examples. There’s a freshness of sweet violet on the nose, with liquorice and smoky woodland notes and a pomegranate core, slightly bloody. The long acid is tightly knit with velvety tannins. Graceful and powerful, the palate is soaked with the wines’s floral character, and austere on the finish – which is normal at this stage. A great wine in a great vintage." Drink 2023 - 2050

94/100 James Suckling

"Lemon blossom with cherry and sliced strawberry aromas that follow through to a medium body, with firm and lightly austere tannins and a bright finish. Cedar and orange peel to the fruit. Needs time to soften. Better after 2027."
