2017 Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice

Bricco Pernice is a 'dream come true' for the Cogno winemakers. Drawn from a tiny, ancient sub-plot in the Ravera Cru, this is the Barolo equivalent of a legendary 'lieu dit' from a Burgundy vineyard. These rows only grow the Lampia sub-variety of Nebbiolo, from old vines famous for power and complexity but in particular the "encompassing softness" they impart, especially after three years in large oak (and six years since the vintage). A genuinely majestic, grand-scale Barolo that can age very well but also drink extraordinarily well on release. This kind of wine doesn't come around every day. Put a couple in the box...

Its Origins

After working with Marcarini in La Morra, Elvio Cogno returned to his family village in 1990 to rebuild an historical farm into the home of one of Piedmont's more important Barolo producers. Now daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore are the force behind the rising fortunes of the house, producing strictly classic wines with modern cleanliness and technique, low yields and sustainable, closely managed vineyards.

What The Critics Say

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Novello. 'I think this is better than vintage 2016, I think the tannins are more beautiful.' Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. A little rich on the nose but not lacking in precision and showing great depth. Still not completely open. Brooding but with aeration becomes more floral and perfumed. Mouth-filling juicy fruit with polished, fine, almost velvety tannins. Closes up on the finish but showing impeccable balance. Not a wine you would associate with the torrid 2017 year. Outstanding for the vintage. (WS)." Drink 2024 - 2036

97/100 Decanter Magazine, Michaela Morris (2016 vintage)

"Cogno’s Valter Fissore has come out with a magnificent set of distinct 2016 Baroli demonstrating the multifaceted Ravera cru. Among the first to be picked, Bricco Pernice is a warm, south-facing parcel sitting at 320 metres. Limestone-rich clay gives an ample, powerful wine that needs years to come into its own. Still brooding and firm, there are no hard edges, and this is already showing great class and detail. Vigorous, chalky tannins wrap around profound fruit depths of salted plum and macerated cherry. The explosive and expressive finish unfolds with liquorice, mint, potpourri and blood orange. To be released early spring 2021." Drink 2025 - 2041

94-97/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 Barolo Bricco Pernice is a baby, and yet it is so full of promise. Sweet and perfumed in its first impression but also massively tannic, the 2016 is going to require a number of years to be at its best. Today, the structure is imposing, the wine's mid-weight feel notwithstanding. There is plenty to the 2016 Pernice, but it is not showing all of its cards today. Time in the glass brings out the wine's striking red fruit and floral aromatics and inner perfume."
