Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Andrew Caillard MW

"Medium deep crimson. Very attractive ripe dark cherry cassis mocha roasted chestnut aromas. Generous and chocolatey with voluminous dark cherry blackcurrant fruits, fine gravelly/ velvety tannins, integrated mocha vanilla oak complexity and persistent mineral acidity. Finishes grippy firm with plentiful dark fruits. Very good."

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS

“The bouquet is compact, tense, varietal and very enticing with aromas of blackberry and cigar tobacco, olive and black cherry, sweet vanilla and wood smoke, crushed roses and violets. The core is the fruits, the foundation the gravelly earthy woody combinations. On the palate – equally compact and youthful, tense and taut. Flavours of dark berries then lead, gun-powder, toasty barrel spices and its natural sweetness, stony earth and non fruits reflecting the nose. Firm tannins and plenty of acidity, power, length and appeal. Decant for service. best drinking from 2024 through 2034+.”

5 Stars Michael Cooper

“This classy, French oak-aged Cabernet Sauvignon (100%) is dark, mouthfilling and supple, with concentrated, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours and nutty, savoury notes adding complexity. One for the cellar.”
