Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Stylish chardonnay with peach, grapefruit, hazelnut, spicy oak and brioche flavours supported by gentle, fruity acidity. A weighty wine with a pleasingly silken texture."
95/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"A calm, even, fragrant bouquet of Chardonnay. A mix of ripe yellow fruits layered between scents of oak with cashew and brown spice then ripe grapefruit and apple. Equally calm on the palate, balanced, even and persistent. Flavours of yellow stone fruit and citrus then roasted nut and cream. The weighty creamy texture is not forced yet is also a wine with a youthful medium+ acidity, a new oak moment and a natural complexity bringing all the attributes together. Lengthy finish and well made.
94/100 Gary Walsh The Wine Front
"They make very good chardonnay over at Neudorf. Reliably good. Floral, perfumed, cashew, mango and stone fruit, spice tucked in. It delivers flavour smoothly, has gloss and glide, but keeps itself nice and tight with some bright citrus acidity and flavour, and flinty highlights. Finish is long and harmonious. It’s a great thing to drink.
