Its Origins
Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Rebecca Gibb MW
"It caresses the mouth with its round, chocolatey tannins that leave you licking your cheeks. If KFC’s chicken is finger licking good, Tom’s is palate-licking good. This is a pretty freaking delicious and super young wine."
16.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW
Moutere clay gravels, low yield, spontaneous fermentation, no lactic bacteria added, aged in barrel (20% new), unfined, unfiltered, vegan.
Transparent garnet. Rich, frank, easy-to-love nose. Nice freshness on the (dry) finish. Spicy and already accessible. Not heavy and not too sweet. Real charm. Just the job now." Drink 2019 - 2023

"This is bright and expressive, with sweet ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit with hints of tar and spice. There’s a lovely crunchy structure here: it’s really fruity and pretty with some cranberry brightness as well as a bit of fruity depth. Great balance to this wine."
