Everything beautiful about Pinot Noir is captured in the top wine from Neudorf. Effortlessly on show are floral, herbal, savoury and mineral touches, with fruit that has its own richness and depth but which plays an almost a supporting role to the food-friendly elegance. One of the world's most appealing bottles of Pinot Noir. This wine sells out -- buy!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Cameron Douglas

"Young, fresh, vibrant, varietal and enticing bouquet of Pinot Noir with aromas of wild flowers and red berry fruits, understated oak spices and a tease of toasted barrel, dried herb and an overwhelming sense of place encapsulated by a haunting steely & flinty allure. All these ideas materialise as flavours and textures on the palate. Dry, fine, chalky tannins and acidity to match. Flavours of light red fruits and tea, enante complexity and lengthy finish. Drinkable today though best from 2020 through 2026." Drink 2020 - 2026

95/100 Huon Hooke

"Deepish red colour with a tint of purple. The bouquet is vegetal, foresty and gently smoky, the palate intense and bright, with firm tannins and medium-body. The wine is highly-structured and firm, taut and slightly grippy, with good intensity and the structure to cope with quite hearty foods. There's a strong oak influence. Some bitterness on the finish is in harmony with the body and structure of the wine. It's quite a powerful pinot, an impressive wine of character. 14 MAR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2029

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Tasted around six months ago. More mellow and more approachable than I remember it, with pleasing fruit and savoury characters. It has depth and emerging complexity together with a pleasing texture and good length 02 APR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025
