Everything beautiful about Pinot Noir is captured in the top wine from Neudorf. Deliciously on show are floral, herbal, savoury and mineral touches, with a fruit depth that has its own richness but which plays an almost a supporting role to the food-friendly elegance. Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Stephen Wong MW

"Mid-ruby. Unfurling nose; floral with an amalgam of red and black fruits, lightly peppery and with layered interest from oak and bouquet garni herbs. The palate starts elegant and flows across the grainy tannins which close in on the dry and grippy finish. Oriental market and seed spice flavours develop on the back. This needs more time to settle, but the structure will likely remain dominant over the mid-weight fruit. Still, an elegant and classy pinot which is well worth cellaring 23 Apr 2024." Drink 2027 - 2039

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Surprisingly accessible pinot noir with an appealingly smooth texture and flavours suggesting grape stem sand dried herbs. High energy wine with the potential to develop well with bottle age." Drink 2024 – 2030

92/100 James Suckling

"This is aromatic and alluring with orange-peel, strawberry and crushed-stone character with some seashell undertones. Medium body, refined tannins and a crunchy and fresh finish. An elegant and delicate pinot. Drink now. Screw cap."
