Always scooping awards, this is an icon kiwi Gewurztraminer from the experts at Johanneshof. With a balanced (though rich) sweetness and an satisfyingly unctuous mouthfeel, this is a Gewurz-lover's delight and a classic match with those spicy foods and salty-savoury cheeses. Otherwise you could just drink it all by itself -- it's a treat.

Its Origins

Johanneshof Cellars is a boutique, artisan winery producing wines from hand harvested grapes only sourced from their vineyards and growers in Marlborough. It is jointly owned and operated by Edel Everling, a fifth generation winemaker from Germany and Warwick Foley from Marlborough. Both winemakers trained in the world-famous wine area of Rheingau, Germany, where Edel studied for her degree in viticulture and oenology at Geisenheim University while Warwick was a guest student there. They continued to work for renowned wineries in Germany and New Zealand before setting up Johanneshof Cellars in 1991.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Totally seductive and delicious; the gorgeous bouquet shows mango, rockmelon, rose petal and spice aromas, leading to a concentrated palate that is plush and velvety. The wine offers terrific fruit purity, richness and intensity, wonderfully enhanced by silky texture and refreshing acidity. Another classic offering from Johanneshof. Style: Off-dry. $30.00. www.johanneshof.co.nz. May 2018." Drink 2018 - 2022

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A rich, almost syrupy gewürztraminer, with concentrated varietal flavours of lychee, ginger and rose petal together with a toasty, savoury character and a characteristic stab of bitterness on the finish 14/9/2018." Drink 2018 - 2023

18.5/20 Raymond Chan

"The nose is taut and elegant in presentation with intense and penetrating fruit aromas of exotic florals and Turkish Delight melded with piquant floral and root-ginger notes, along with nuances of herbs, spices and musk. The nose is firmly concentrated. Medium in sweetness and medium-full bodied, the palate has a concentrated heart of exotic florals, tropical fruit and Turkish Delight, root-ginger, cool florals and herbs, with nuances of spice and musk. The palate is subtly rich and has an unctuous suggestion, with soft acidity adding to the roundness. The palate is smooth-flowing with an underlying core and line, leading to a lingering finish of spices, ginger and herbs. This is an intense and tightly-bound medium Gewurztraminer with flavours of exotic florals, root-ginger, herbs, spices and musk on a smooth palate. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 4 years. Fruit from the Lower Wairau Valley, fermented in stainless-steel to 13.5% alc. and 15 g/L RS. 18.5/20 Apr 2018 RRP $30.00."
