2015 Pegasus Bay Aged Release Prima Donna

Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
98/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Combining power with sophistication, the wine shows dark berry, charcuterie, toasted spice, porcini, fine lather, and hazelnut aromas on the nose. The opulent palate is both graceful and structured with gorgeous complexity, wonderfully framed by beautifully melded tannins, finishing impressively long and gratifying. At its best: now to 2032. www.pegasusbay.com. Feb 2025." Drink 2025 - 2032 (Tasted in 2025)
97/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"The nose is voluminous, with concentrated aromas of black cherry, blackberry, olive, black tea, herbs, sweet spice, dried shiitake and dried floral. Medium-full bodied, aromas of black cherry, dried blackberry and tapenade intertwined with black tea, nutmeg, cinnamon, liquorice, dried hibiscus and dried shiitake. The wine is detailed in layers; the fruit possesses vitality and concentration, accompanied by spice with sharpness and edge. Silky tannins carry floral and black tea fragrances throughout and provide a fine, enduring structure. Impressive, refined and persistent. Match with beef wellington and herb-crusted lamb over the next 5+ years. Only produced in exceptional vintages, best barrels selection. Fruit from mainly ungrafted vines over 30 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with approx. one-third whole clusters and as many whole berries as possible to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 30% new French oak barriques. 19.5/20 pts (97 pts) Feb 2025." Drink 2025 - 2030+ (Tasted in 2025)
96/100 James Sucking
"Grand, majestic and complex pinot noir that has an expansive, entrancing style. Black and red cherries, plums, earthy notes, woody spices and a wealth of pot-pourri and forest-floor complexity. Deep, flavorsome dark fruit, long, succulent tannins and an expansive, rising finish. Superb! Good aging potential. Drink or hold. Screw cap." (Tasted in 2019)
