This is the first time we have been able to offer this NZ classic at this incredible price. Always a consistent ageworthy red that has been produced for 30+ years. A classy Bordeaux style from Hawkes Bay. Babich are old hands in the region and the Irongate is superb real estate on the famous Gimblett Gravels. In this wine they keep to their classy line, with medium body and bright fruit on an elegant and beautifully tempered frame of fine acid and ripe tannins. An age-worthy wine that is not about power so much as balance -- and sheer quality.

What The Critics Say

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Grown in the Irongate Vineyard and matured in French oak barriques (typically 35 per cent new), this elegant, complex, firmly structured red is designed for cellaring and is typically a very stylish wine in the classic Bordeaux mould. Still very youthful, the 2015 (4.5*) is deeply coloured, with a fragrant, savoury bouquet. Mouthfilling, it has deep, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, showing good complexity, fine-grained tannins and a long future ahead; open 2020+." Drink 2017 - 2025

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Reasonably dense, oaky red with floral, violet, cranberry, plum, chocolate, mocha and nutty oak flavours. An elegant red that's accessible but will improve with further bottle age. 2/6/2017." Drink 2017 - 2022

18.5+/20 Raymond Chan

"Deep, concentrated and intense with fragrant blackberry, blackcurrant and cassis aromas and an amalgam of dark herbs and iron-earth mineral notes. The oaking is integrated. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich, sweet and luscious flavours of ripe blackcurrants and blackberry fruit with cassis liqueur, and some savoury herb and iron-earth and mineral notes. The palate has a good core of fine, grainy tannin extraction providing an excellent heart, a hint of robustness and palate presence. The acidity lends freshness and liveliness, and the wine carries to a very long, elegant finish of cassis and herbs. This will keep for 8-10+ years. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc from the ‘Irongate’ vineyard, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 40% new French oak. 18.5+/20 Sep 2017 RRP $39.95." Drink 2017 - 2028
