2014 Forrest Reserve Gimblett Gravels Syrah

Syrah
Its Origins
Forrest wines was started in 1988 by doctors John and Brigid Forrest, focused on planting in Marlborough’s Renwick but including some expansion to joint venture Cornerstone in Hawkes Bay’s Gimblett Gravels. Though Brigid is a medical rather than scientific doctor, she was and is equally involved in the envisioning and running of this hands-on operation. Nonetheless, John’s immense energy and former doctorate in molecular biochemistry has made him not only one of the most well-known but technically expert of New Zealand winemakers. Experimental too, as today the sprawling Forrest range explores many terroirs, mainly in Marlborough, while taking credit in the ‘Doctor’s’ range for early ventures into new varieties such as Arneis and Gruner Veltliner, as well as successful naturally low alcohol styles of Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
What The Critics Say
95/100 and Outstanding Cameron Douglas MS
"Fantastic colour and concentration in the bouquet with scents of black currant, exotic chocolate, dark spices and wood smoke. Youthful, firm and dry as the wine touches the palate, tannins have grip and polish, ripeness and power. A complex wine that continues to develop as it ages. Lengthy and delicious. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2034." (Tasted August 2024)
