5 Stars John Caro

A staggering offer on a perfectly cellared, 35 year old wonder. The Grand Annee is a top offering from the definitive house in the Loire Valley, whose wines are so age-worthy that they have a habit of holding them back and then releasing them after decades. One such opportunity has come our way, and so this deliciously fresh, complex and serious wine is available for prices that make no sense. A wonderful food white to drink now, or cellar further. Limited stocks!

Its Origins

Marc Brédif was established in the 1890s, but the Domaine can boast a history which dates back to 1550. Ancient troglodyte cellars, which contain local wines over a hundred years of age, were carved into the underlying chalk during the tenth century, among the finest and most extensive Chais in Valley Loire. Marc Brédif makes the finest and most age worthy Vouvray Chenin Blanc, wines which drink magnificently on release. "Golden straw hue. Nose of green apples and stone fruit, honeyed citrus, acacia florals, hawthorn and fig. Generously layered palate, valencia orange and ripe apple, pine nuts and fragrant orange blossom notes before a complex, long and lingering finish of honeyed citrus and pear."

What The Critics Say

Vintage Report 1990: 5 stars and Outstanding, Michael Broadbent

"Another excellent vintage for early-picked dry whites, reds and medium-sweet to sweet wines. Early but uneven flowering. Drought and scorching sun tempered by later rains. Early morning mists in October enabled superb sweet wines to be made. Firmer, less luscious than the ‘89’s."

Vintage Report 1990: Winedoctor, Chris Kissack

“The 1990 vintage was a great one in Vouvray. Fans of the appellation and the wines will already know their preferences, but as a quick recap, this is one of two back-to-back vintages which produced wines of excellent quality. In 1989 the wines were less marked by botrytis, with a more minerally and acid-framed character as a result. In 1990, however, the vineyards of Vouvray saw a more convincing attack of botrytis, and as a result the sweet wines tend to have a broader and richer character. Of course this is a generalisation, and it depends on the cuvée in question, but the wines of 1990 tend to channel the botrytis flavours over the mineral, while perhaps the opposite is true for those from the 1989 vintage.” – Winedoctor, Chris Kissack
