2021 Astrolabe Awatere Chardonnay

5 Stars Richard Caro
In stock
A stylish Chardonnay from Astrolabe that is now sourced in Awatere, and was formerly bottled under a regional Marlborough label. Simon Waghorn from Astrolabe cut his teeth making Chardonnay in Gisborne, and this organically-grown wine puts his knowledge on display. Weighty and full but with vibrant aromatics, defined fruit and minerally freshness: this is why Marlborough Chard is underpriced. But Astrolabe have known that for years. Try it!

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 vintage)

“Complex, sophisticated, pure, ripe and very enticing bouquet. Aromas and flavours of apple and grapefruit, white peach and white apricot then apple. There’s a natural fruit spice quality, sea breeze scent and youthful impact from the intensity and use of oak. Delicious, weighty, enegaing and fresh on the palate. Flavours mirror the bouquet with a near full-bodied texture, some fine tannins and plenty of acidity for structure and breadth. A long finish, this wine is complex as well as delicious, will cellar and age well for the next 2-3 years. Best drinnking from mid to late 2023 through 2030+.”

5 Stars M.Cooper (2020 vintage)

"The delicious 2020 vintage is a top expression of Marlborough Chardonnay. Hand-harvested in the Awatere Valley, it was fermented and matured for nine months in French oak barriques and puncheons. Bright, light lemon/green, with a fragrant, savoury bouquet, it is mouthfilling, fresh and finely poised, with deep stonefruit flavours, complex, very harmonious, well-rounded and lingering."
