A top flight Austrian Gruner from one of the country's special single vineyards. These 85 year old vines of the Kaferberg vineyard, lie on a bed of ancient mixed soils consisting of crystalline and bohemian rock along with clay marl and gravels. The effect of the vineyard only underlines the Gruner Veltliner grape's inherent contrast of lush ripe concentration with saline mineral freshness. A wine of immense appeal and potential, the Kaferberg will delight now and for decades to come.

Grüner Veltliner

Its Origins

From 35 hectares of Erste Lage (Premier Cru) holdings in the Kamptal, the Hiedler family has been producing wine in Langelois since the mid-18th century. Starting in 1980, Ludwig and María Angeles Hiedler have led operations, while their son Ludwig Jr. finishes his winemaking studies and practicum at Von Volxem. Hiedler’s holdings are in the best vineyards in the Kamptal, with Riesling parcels in the Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, and Grüner Veltliner in the deep loess vineyards that rest at the base of those mountains: Lamm, Grub, and Renner. Hiedler’s other sites in the area include a ‘Grand Cru’ monopole, Thal, Spiegel, Steinhaus, and Loiserberg. In addition to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the Hiedlers work with Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), the first plantings of which were planted by Ludwig’s father in the Schenkenbickl, a ‘Grand Cru’ plot just below the Käferberg. All organic/natural practices. Notably, malolactic fermentation is never blocked but allowed to occur naturally, allowing Hiedler a quite broad and unique dimension of texture and weight; a distinctive approach to both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from this region.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Falstaff Magazine, Peter Moser

"Pale yellow, green hints, silver reflections. A multi-faceted bouquet with subtle wood savouriness, a touch of herbs and yellow fruit. Powerful and juicy on the palate with a hint of vanilla, smoky nuances and a subtle sweetness on the lingering finish. A reliable food wine with definite ageing potential."

93/100 James Suckling

"Rich and generous gruner with notes of caramel, apricots and marmalade. Toasted spices, too. It’s full-bodied and weighty with delicious spice and ripe orange fruit. Drink or hold."
