2020 Remelluri Rioja Labastida

A fine and elegant Rioja from a unique producer. Remelluri is the family estate of Telmo Rodrigues, a legend of Spanish wine whose reputation is hard to overstate. This label is both a departure from tradition and a preservation of it: it was created to maintain the estate's long-standing contract suppliers in a neighbouring village, yet bottled as a village wine -- against Rioja blending traditions. By contrast to its companion from 5km away on the other border or "Linde" (the Mediterranean-influenced San Vincente village), Labastida's 400+ years in wine have enjoyed a higher rainfall and a cooler Atlantic breeze, producing a slightly more bright-fruited, aromatic style. Terroir Rioja for a very cheap price, this needs to be experienced.

Its Origins

Remelluri was founded by monks in the 14th Century, although there is evidence dating even farther back of wine being made on these premises. The vines changed hands a number of times over the years before being purchased by Jaime Rodriguez in 1967. In 2010, Jaime’s son and daughter, Telmo and Amaia Rodríguez, took the reins of the estate and set about making a series of changes to showcase the potential and diversity of Remellur’s different terroirs, and ultimately reclaim Rioja’s viticultural history. The first major change was to cut down the production of Remelluri wines by one third, restricting it to wines produced from the estate’s own grapes. The two wines made from grapes grown in the surrounding villages are now sold under the label ‘Las Lindes de Remelluri’, and are identified each by their village of origin: Labastida and San Vicente de la Sonsierra. As a nod to Rioja’s historic viticultural traditions, they have begun moving the Garnacha from trellis to bush-grown vines and will be working increasingly with mixed field plantings. Although Remelluri has always eschewed chemical treatments in the vineyard, 2010 marked the year of the estate’s full organic certification. Work in the winery plays a secondary role in Telmo’s philosophy, but great care is taken to make sure that each bottle reflects the terruño of the region: wines are fermented with native yeasts, each plot is vinified separately, new oak is used very scarcely and the wines are very lightly filtered and fined.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez

"The Lindes collection comes alternately in Bordeaux and Burgundy bottles, depending on the amount of Garnacha in the wine, with a Burgundian bottle for the wines with more Garnacha. The new 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida is made with grapes from 11 grape growers in the village with different lieux-dits ranging from 440 to 710 meters above sea level, and the final blend was 89% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano and 5% Garnacha. The winemaking and aging were similar for all the wines to highlight the differences from the places, in this case, the character of Labastida, which is more floral and with more finesse than San Vicente, more serious, more delicate but not without clout. This has 14.12% alcohol. This is the largest cuvée with 77,264 bottles. It was bottled in April 2022." Drink 2024 - 2030
