2022 Duhart Milon Pauillac En Primeur

96 Points Jeb Dunnuck

En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2025. Located next door to its owner, Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Duhart-Milon has for centuries been regarded as Lafite's un-official second wine. But it has also built a reputation as one of the best. A 'model' Pauillac, it is structured and dense with the toasty and 'sappy' perfume ascribed by tradition to this famous terroir. Unlike other retailers (who charge a second payment on arrival), our En Primeur prices are the total and final landed cost, including GST. With the changing economic situation and foreign exchange risk, we do this to ensure you have complete certainty over what you will pay.

Its Origins

Like much of Pauillac, the estate later known as Duhart-Milon was first put under vine in the early 18th century, at the behest of the ravenously successful Chateau Lafite. Directly adjoining the west edge of today’s Chateau Lafite Rothchild, Duhart-Milon’s vineyards were noted for quality. Early on it had early become effectively Lafite’s ‘second’ wine, and in the 1855 classification it was recognised as the only 4th Growth in Pauillac. By this time it was owned by the Casteja family, under the inherited Chateau name, Duhart-Milon. In 1937 inheritance and ownership issues saw the estate sold, leading to a period of instability and a drop in quality. It wasn’t until 1962 that the Rothschild family were able to buy their neighbour and institute an ambitious plan of vineyard overhaul and development, along with new winemaking facilities in addition to the benefits of Lafite’s knowledge and in-house cooperage. In the decades that followed the vineyard was consolidated from 42 to 71 hectares, and by the time of the great Bordeaux vintages late in the 20th century, Duhart-Milon had regained its rightful place as a great wine among Bordeaux and a model of the Pauillac style.

What The Critics Say

94-96+/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"94-96+ Points! The Grand Vin 2022 Château Duhart-Milon is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. It brings more richness as well as classic Pauillac character in its lead pencil, graphite, tobacco, and red and black fruit-driven aromatics. With gorgeous richness, a medium to full bodied mouthfeel, and a great finish, this utterly classic, seamless, balanced Pauillac should be snatched up by readers. It's going to give the 2009 a run for its money."

95-96/100 James Suckling

"Very Pauillac in its blackcurrant, dark chocolate and walnut husk character. Full-bodied yet compacted. Wet earth, mushroom, earth, black tobacco. Fine and intense tannins. Fresh and complex. 78% cabernet sauvignon and 22% merlot."

94-96/100 Wine Cellar Insider, Jeff Leve

"Lead pencil, spice, red currants, flowers, and dark cherries crowd into the nose. On the palate, the wine is elegant, refined, soft, and pure. There is density along with vibrance, spice, lift, and width. The finish, with its blend of red fruits, cocoa, orange rind, spice, espresso, and plums lingers, which is a good things as you as much of this on your palate as possible. The wine is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. 13.5% ABV, 3.9 pH." Drink 2026 - 2050
