Its Origins
Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Ray Jordan
"A wine that reaches into the best parcels of fruit in the best years. It was a good year for white wines in Margaret River and this superbly crafted modern-style chardonnay captures it. Fine and delicate with chalky minerally edges to the fine mix of pear and cut lime that sit across the melon and lightly roasted cashew. A little brioche brings further complexity. A mighty fine wine."
96/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Jane Faulkner
"Often a powerhouse of a wine, but this vintage, it's not too big, not too light, just right. The palate is refined and feels effortless as the citrus flavours mingle with grilled-almond lees, clotted cream and some oak spice offering savoury nuances. There’s certainly texture, but the fine line of acidity just reins in everything as the finish lingers. It feels cool and calm." Drink 2023 - 2033
95+/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin
"The 2021 MJW Chardonnay is a combination of clones 95 and Gin Gin (equal split), and currently shows all the lemongrass, grapefruit and brine on the nose that we'd expect from this vintage. Not overly cool but certainly with some rain at key times, the 2021 season has been fascinating to watch evolve in bottle. The Chardonnays, en masse, have shown a pristine, glassy, sleek countenance, and this here is no different. Polished, elegant, powerful, salty, mineral and dense. Latent power. Very good! If anything, it's a little more raw and a little "less" sleek than some of the previous vintages. It will come together in time and no doubt score higher given the trajectory of these wines and their early release as two-year-old wines. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
