A superb Napa Chardonnay from a legendary California producer. Freemark complement their fame in Cabernet with an offering in Chardonnay from the Napa Valley, where higher altitudes and cooling fog on the valley floor ensure a long ripening and weighty but refined style. Its Origins

The genesis of Freemark Abbey dates back to 1881 when Josephine and John Tychson purchased 147 acres in the Napa Valley. Five years later, after John’s death, Josephine built her original redwood winery on our current site in St. Helena. In addition to her legacy of innovation and hard work, Josephine earned a place in the history books as the first female vintner in California. Eight decades later, Freemark Abbey helped launch the modern era of California wine. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the winery’s Bosché Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was considered one of America’s most iconic bottlings. Its Chardonnay proved that California could produce stunning world-class wines from this noble variety. Freemark Abbey was one of 12 American wineries chosen to compete in the historic Judgment of Paris tasting in 1976. It was the only producer with entries in both the Cabernet and Chardonnay flights. Ted Edwards has been Freemark Abbey’s winemaker since 1985. His intelligent approach combined with the sheer length of his experience in the Napa Valley – the Rutherford Bench in particular – makes him one of the region’s leading vintners. Today, thanks to Ted’s efforts, Freemark Abbey’s Bosché and Sycamore Vineyard bottlings are among the most coveted wines in the Napa Valley.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Decanter, Anna Lee C. Iijima

"From three vineyards in the Napa Valley, Ahmann Vineyard, Huichica Hills Vineyard and Rancho Sarco. The wine was 85% barrel fermented in 40% new French oak barrels, 15% stainless steel for ten months. Slick with layers of sweet cream and melted butter, this rich, opulent wine characterises that classic California sumptuousness but with a freshness of pear and quince flavours. While unabashedly soft and hedonistic, it's an elegant, smartly sculpted wine with a cooling, salty finish."

93/100 Wine Enthusiast

"Tempting spicy, earthy, toasted oak aromas lead to densely layered pears, almonds, wood char and crème brûlée flavors that fill the palate and echo for minutes on the finish. The wine is full-bodied, almost thick in texture and powerful in flavor."

92/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"These wines are now made by Kristy Melton. The Chardonnay now goes partially through malolactic fermentation, aged in 45% new French oak, and it's a richer yet beautifully balanced Chardonnay. Notes of lemon oil, orange blossom, and honeysuckle, with just touch of toastiness, are followed by a wine that’s beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, and layered on the palate, with loads to love.
