Its Origins

Symington began when Andrew James Symington established himself in Porto in 1882. His subsequent acquisition of three important Port houses Warres, Dows, and Grahams became a legacy passing to his three sons, while many further acquisitions accrued a family portfolio of top quality estates whose practices and reputations have endured until the present day. "The 207-hectare Quinta da Fonte Souto was acquired by the Symington family in 2017 and is their first vineyard outside the Douro. Lying on the slopes of the São Mamede Range at an elevation of 500 metres in the Alentejo subregion of Portalegre, the property benefits from cooler and wetter conditions than the hot Alentejo plain." What The Critics Say

94/100 James Suckling

"A polished red with fine, velvety tannins, with fresh and balanced fruit. Black berries. Dark cherries. Hints of mocha and toasted oak. Flavorful finish. Tight at the end, but finely made. A blend of half syrah and half alicante bouschet. Drinkable now, but better with age."

94/100 Wine Enthusaist, Roger Voss

"The top wine from this estate, purchased in 2017 as the Symington Family's first venture outside the Douro, is in the Portelegra hills of northern Alentejo. This is a dense wine layering Alicante Bouschet and Syrah into a harmonious rich wine. It will develop with powerful textures alongside the black fruits and mineral tannins. Drink this wine from 2025."

17+/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding MW

"Their top red. Very deeply coloured. Complex aroma that has the sweetness and spice of Alicante Bouschet but the dark peppery notes of the Syrah. A little hint of pine and rosemary in this top wine, too. Scented and lightly floral. But it is a dark floral – reminiscent of peony not violets. Some oak sweetness on the palate. Compact but smooth tannins. Firm, dry texture. Needs time for the tannins to slim down but it’s refined and long. 45% Alicante Bouschet and 55% Syrah. 11 months in oak, 80% new. First week in August it was 40 °C so they lost some bunches to sunburn (JH)." 2024 - 2032
