2018 Stephane Ogier Cote Rotie "Selection de Lieux-dits"
Grape
Syrah
Its Origins
The Ogier family have been established growers in Ampuis for over seven generations, but it was only in the 1980s that they began vinifying their own grapes. Stéphane joined the family estate in 1997, working alongside his father Michel, before taking over in 2003. Heralded by some as the face of the Northern Rhône’s new generation, he continues to go from strength to strength. His magnificent new winery allows him to vinify by parcel – a fundamental principle for his project and long-term vision. There is no flight toward volume and anonymity; quite the contrary, and it is exciting indeed. Stéphane studied in Beaune, and he brings this Burgundian approach to terroir to the region. He works with multiple lieux-dits, both in and out of the appellation, vinifying each separately and using oak sparingly to allow the particularities of each to show. (BBR)
What The Critics Say
98/100 Jeb Dunnuck
"In addition to the classic releases, Stéphane likes to release a special bottle set of his single vineyards. There are only a few things more enlightening and educational than tasting through these single lieux-dits. There aren’t many of these sets out there, (only 957 were produced) so I will keep these notes brief, but certainly don’t miss a chance to try these! But De Mont - 95/100, Fongeant - 96/100, Côte-Bodin - 94/100, Cognet - 96+/100, Montmain - 96+/100, Le Champon - 95/100, Bertholon - 96/100, Leyat - 98/100, La Viallière - 98 /100"
