2017 Produttori Barbaresco Riserva Paje

94 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
A defining example of the more defined and feminine style of single-vineyard Barbaresco. Lying among the other great Crus (but not directly adjoining them), Paje occupies a south-west hillside with moderate exposure to the river. This cooling influence as well as limestone soils give Paje a more grippingly fresh, fine-boned structure and fine-cut aromatics. With a bracing early appeal and a wonderful balance in middle development, the Paje is superb and distinctive.

Its Origins

"This vineyard is a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. However Pajè is slightly lower in altitude and the vineyard is more open to the Tanaro River influence resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with high calcium level. In result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins and it is never shy in acidity. The latter makes Pajè somehow sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages. Pajè is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate. First vintage produced was 1967 as a small commemorative label for the "Cavalieri del Tartufo" association. Regular production started from the 1982 vintage." -- It took a sympathetic local priest to realise the only way for the community of Barbaresco to survive, in the poverty of the late 1950's, was for the winemakers to form a co-operative. The first 19 members made their wine in the church basement, but it didn't take long for this idea to provide them with solvency as well as solidarity. Quality too, as a more secure income allowed the individual growers to maintain the high standards they aspired to. Over decades the co-operative grew to it's current membership of 52, during which time it also developed an extensive and almost bewildering array of single vineyard offerings. Until recently the traditional labelling and less-than-dynamic global marketting strategy meant Produttori was strictly the preserve of experts. Nowadays however, as the world trawls Piedmont for both it's obvious and it's hidden gems, Produttori's delightfully backward labelling and proud obsession with qualtity are revealing it as one of the world's most profoundly undervalued wine treasures.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is a fine choice for readers who enjoy wines of freshness, verve and energy. Dark fruit, menthol, spice, pine and crushed rocks are beautifully delineated. This is an especially chiseled wine in the range of 2017 Riservas. I very much like the balance of richness and vibrancy. In a word: classic." Drink 2027 - 2039

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is impressive on all fronts, but especially in terms of aromas. There's so much brightness here with red and purple fruits, rust and a dark note of clove or exotic spice. No element is out of place, but together they help to build the intensity of this balanced wine. It shows a soft, velvety texture, and perhaps there is a little more ripeness overall in this warm vintage. Production is 6,666 bottles. Drink 2024-2045"

17++/20 Jancisrobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Barbaresco. Rich cherry fruit with hints of mint and savoury salty hints. Great depth. Compact succulent red fruit that is much more embryonic than the nose has it. Fantastic length but truly slow, while at the same time you could approach it now. (WS) 14.5% Drink 2022 – 2032"
