2019 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone

95 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
Only produced in the best years, 'Asinone' is the top expression from Poliziano. Very limited production results in real refinement and potential, concentration and subtle power. Here Montepulciano is the Tuscan town (not the grape from Abruzzo), with Vino Nobile being a top village expression of the Sangiovese grape. The Asinone is a superb red to decant or cellar.

Its Origins

Azianda Poliziano is a producer of top Sangiovese, called by Antonio Galloni "one of the reference points in Montepulciano." It was started in 1961 with an initial nucleus of 22 hectares. It has grown over the years to reach its present size of 120 hectares. Its name is an homage to the humanist poet Angelo Ambrogini (1454-1494), known as "Il Poliziano", who was born in Montepulciano. There are approximately 30 hectares of vineyards clustered around the winery's buildings as well as a number of individual properties that range in size from eight to thirty hectares. The vines are planted at altitudes ranging from 280 to 400 metres above sea level, with soil that is primarily volcanic clay and slightly rocky. The geological survey of the Comune of Montepulciano identifies the most important sections with the names: Asinone, Caggiole, Valiano, Lama, Casale and Pozzi.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"The 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone is intense with a bouquet of stone dust, dried violets, black currants and cocoa powder. This is elegance exemplified, velvety and soothing, yet energetic, with a dense wave of polished red and black fruits that wash across the palate, leaving minerals and sweet tannins to mingle toward the close. A subtle layer of sour citrus helps enliven the otherwise-structured finale as minty herbal tones slowly fade. The 2019 is a total darling and has the balance to mature beautifully in collectors’ cellars." Drink 2024 - 2033

95/100 Wines Critic, Raffaele Vecchione

"Juicy and well distended on the nose showing notes of cherries, red prunes, lemon blossom, lime and pomegranate. Full bodied, tannins slightly rigid at the moment and a progressive finale which lights up from the central palate onwards. Better from 2026."

95/100 James Suckling (2018 vintage)

"Dark-cherry aromas with nutmeg and flowers follow through to a full body with firm, linear tannins that are polished and beautiful at the end. Succulent and attractive now, but will age nicely. Drink or hold."
