2019 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia

95 Points James Suckling

One of the most "cellar worthy wines in the world" according to Antonio Galloni, the beautiful Rancia is developing its reputation in leaps and bounds. From a higher-altitude, 6 ha single vineyard in Southern Chianti Classico the style is deep, focused and finely structured with dark fruits and savoury undertow. Utterly impressive yet so versatile as both a dinner match and a drink-soon or cellar wine, Felsina's Rancia is a future classic.

Its Origins

"Considering its modest price, Rancia remains one the most fairly priced, cellar worthy wines in the world." (Antonio Galloni, Felsina Restrospective). The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.

What The Critics Say

95/100 James Suckling

"Darker fruit on the nose with walnut, spice box, incense and espresso bean, too. Medium-bodied, firm and structured with polished tannins and a creamy, compact mid-palate. Quality dark oak spice throughout. Long and rich. Better from 2024."

94+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"An icon wine of Tuscany, the Fèlsina 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia (with 48,000 bottles made) is distinguished by its special aromatic fingerprint that truly brings us to a sense of place. At its heart, the wine reveals dark fruit and plum. More interesting, however, are the dusty mineral sensations that give so much texture and depth to the Rancia. These aromas can only be found in Sangiovese from the galestro and alberese-rich soils of Chianti Classico. This vintage follows up with sweet tobacco, toasted chestnut and scorched earth. Give this wine more time to flesh out and evolve in the bottle." Drink 2024 - 2040

94/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"Amplified even further is the 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia, which offers up a musky cologne of cedar, cherry licorice, cracked pepper, and menthol. It is medium to full bodied, with a rich tannin structure, a broad mid-palate, and a long, fragrant finish."
