2022 Noon Reserve Shiraz

95 Points John Caro

One of the most special Shiraz wines in the world, the Noon Reserve Shiraz offers hedonism and boutique quality. It is sourced from the same 1.6 hectares or ‘20 Rows’ since the first Reserve Shiraz in 1997, where winemaking guru and Master of Wine Drew Noon uses traditional wooden baskets to hand press the fruit of vines more than 40+ years old, which growing in deep alluvial soils. Langhorne Creek's slow ripening climate allows a fuller style with immense body but also definition and finesse. Robert Parker has given 96+ points to a long run of vintages, with five receiving a staggering 99. "'Life is too short not to be drinking the wines of Drew & Rae Noon" This sells for mega dollars in the US. Drink now or cellar, but don't miss out!

Its Origins

The Noon family’s winemaking on their McLaren Vale property had been local and slightly under the radar. But when the property went up for sale, son Drew Noon MW returned from winemaking work at Tyrrells and Cassegrain, and then as a jobbing winemaker in Victoria, to take over the reigns. Combining the simplicity and artisan directness of his father’s basket-press approach with his newfound skills in crafting wine to the highest market standards, Drew’s work ethic heavily overcompensated for what they lacked in backing. With continuing access to old vines in Langhorne Creek’s highly favourable climate, Noon wines soon won the attention of Robert Parker and international acclaim was to follow. While remaining full-bodied, hedonistic reds of the old school tradition, Noon wines’ combination of extreme approachability with distinctive authenticity and character has ensured them an enduring position at the premium level of Australian winemaking.

What The Critics Say

93/100 JamesSuckling.com, Ned Goodwin MW

"A full-weighted shiraz, distinctly of Langhorne Creek's salty zip code. Notes of blueberry, iodine, pulled pork, clove, anise and pepper grind. The finish, a broad plume of flavor that sweeps nicely across the palate. A salubrious wine of oomph, belied by an exactitude and uncanny elegance. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

95/100 Vinous, Angus Hughson (2020 vintage)

"The decadent and seductive 2021 Reserve explodes with vibrant jammy, juby aromas before building with intriguing ham bone and spice elements. It's packed with an impressively dense flavor of sweet fruits topped with licorice and spice. The tannins are pretty measured while underpinning an incredibly long and supple finish. This is already drinking beautifully but has the balance to enjoy over the medium term. Drink 2024-2032.

96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 Shiraz Reserve is a star, marrying hints of mint with dark chocolate, blackberries and black olives. Full-bodied and plush, it features a lovely velvety texture that persists right to the end of the long finish. Big, powerful and intense, it retains a sense of softness and elegance, driven by the fineness of the tannins and notions of red raspberries that appear on the finish."
